Introduction

The Department of Women and Child Development at the Secretariat level was created in the year 1994, prior to which it was  a part of the Social Welfare Department.  The department is headed by a Minister who  is  supported by a Secretariat having a staff strength  of 45.  The field departments  attached to the Women and Child Development Department are :

  • Women and Child Development
  • Empowerment of  Welfare of  Differently Abled and  Senior Citizens
  • Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation
  • Karnataka State  Commission for Women
  • Jawahar Bal Bhavan Society
  • Karnataka State Social Welfare Board
  • Commissionerate for persons with Disabilities
  • Karnataka Balavikas Academy
  • Karnataka State Commision for  Protection of Child Rights
     
          The Department is responsible for the welfare and development of women, children, elderly and  differently abled  in the State.  Besides implementing developmental programmes, it formulates necessary policies, programmes and schemes and also co-ordinates the efforts of both governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the field of women, children, senior citizens  and those who are differently abled.

    The Secretariat is the administrative office  for the Department  of Women and Child Development.  It is responsible for planning, policy making, budgeting and other welfare services for women and children.  It co-ordinates with the Planning, Finance and other related Government Departments and provides guidelines and norms for the  all round development of women and children.  It assists in decision making during  Cabinet meetings, legislative functions and liaison with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Government  of India. 

             On the whole, the department aims to improve the socio-economic status of the disadvantaged groups among women, Children, Senior Citizens  and Differently abled.
